Porgai present bags
'wrapping presents can be a work of art'

Thank you to all who showed interest in our products and projects and to all you lovely people who bought something from us at Greenbelt!

Porgai present bags are now available from the Get Ethical website: Click here for our page at getethical.com
You can purchase individual bags or save money on postage by buying three. A wider selection will be available soon so please keep popping back. If you carry out a search using Porgai they will all come up together but don't neglect to see what else we have on offer on the site

The nativity set was very popular and we are still waiting for our producers to let us know how many they are able to supply before Christmas 2007. Unfortunately we may not be able to meet all requests this year but will be working with our producers to ensure we have enough next year. We will be in touch with you soon.

ttt The story behind Porgai present bags uuu

Did you know that every year we use over 8,000 tons of wrapping paper at Christmas - the equivalent of approximately 50,000 trees? To help cut down on this waste, we began as a family to wrap up our Christmas presents in material. Then instead of throwing away the paper the material could be saved and reused by those receiving the presents.

Wrapping the present in material was a great paper saving idea, but getting the material to look neat was problematic!

Then during Christmas 2006 we wondered if we could have some bags made that uniquely, would look more like a traditional present with a ribbon and bow. At this point the idea of present bags was born.

We wanted the production of the present bags to benefit people in a less economically developed country - but where and how? Fortunately through a local contact we were able to make the necessary links with a group of artisans in the village of Sittilingi in Tamil Nadu in Southern India. Each bag is not just a bag but features unique embroidery, handcrafted by the women of Sittilingi - hence wrapping presents becomes a work of art! In this way the production of Porgai present bags and wall hangings enables the Lambadi women in the Sittilingi valley to rediscover and maintain their fading tradition of intricate embroidery.

We have bags available for different occasions and in different sizes.

The development of present bags has taken place in a relatively short time and this website is still under construction.
We have lots of ideas planned and more information will be provided  after we have visited the producers early in the new year.

Please come back soon or send an email to ask us to go on our mailing list
or alternatively click on the link below and buy some of the bags from the getethical website.
